President-elect Donald Trump has sworn to repeal the artificial intelligence policy of current President Joe Biden once he assumes the presidential seat for the second term.
This breeds uncertainty for the future of AI in the U.S. Hosted by the Biden Administration, AI experts and government scientists from a number of U.S. allies including Canada, United Kingdom, Kenya, and Singapore, gathered on Wednesday in San Francisco, the commercial hub for AI development.
Their agenda includes discussions on possible methods for the detection of and protection from AI-generated deepfakes which fuels sexual abuse, harassment, harmful impersonation and fraud. It is the first of such a meeting of widely gathered AI experts since the World Summit in May where world leaders agreed to build a network of government-backed safety institutes for the advance of research and testing of AI technology.
In his presidential campaign, Trump promised to ‘repeal Biden’s dangerous executive order that hinders AI innovation and imposes radical leftwing ideas on the development of this technology’. But he has failed to make clear what exactly about the order he intends to change.
Most tech industry groups, including Meta, Microsoft, Google and Amazon appear satisfied with the AI safety approach of Biden’s administration and have been agitating that the new agency be preserved, and its work be codified into law.
‘There’s no reason to believe that we’ll be doing a 180 when it comes to the work of the AI Safety Institute’, said Heather West, a senior fellow at the Center for European Policy Analysis.
In 2019, Trump was the first President to sign an executive order about AI directing federal agencies to prioritize advanced research and development in the sector.
